Marufuji Winery "Rubaiyat Rouge Barrel Aged" 2020

Rubaiyat Rouge Barrel Aged is a Merlot matured in oak, as the name says. Black cherry and raspberry open it, leather and a green edge of capsicum behind them, before black plum, blackcurrant, and tobacco arrive on the palate.

Best served at 15–18 °C. The body is medium and the tannin likewise, while a high acidity keeps the whole thing lifted rather than heavy. Dry, and more savoury than the opening suggests.
